Not a bad book. It has some basic instructional text in areas like US Government, Economics, World History, etc. There is one practice test inside. Finally, the book wraps up with advice on how to take the test, including speculations about how to guess, calm your anxieties, and the like. All in all, worth scanning the text, and the test is similar to many others, including the State Department's own. The answers are well explained in the key.Here are the problems I saw. First of all, there are many video lectures included in the instructional text as links. They are worthless. What you will see is the text repeated on a white board, with a lecturer who seems like she's in an 8th-grade classroom filling in blanks. Her style is wooden and hard to follow, but the real problem is that there is no new information presented. Truth is, much better content can be found for free on the web. Wikipedia is a great start - they have just the right level of detail to nail all the practice tests.
Second, this is a very expensive book, over $40! Ouch! But after paying 4-8 times the price of other similar texts, you don't actually get more for your money. I fully expected the high price to be due to much more content, and for the book to contain 5 or more practice tests. It does not. At the very end of the book, you are directed to a site that offers some additional material (not sure if it's original or not) and hallelujah more practice test questions! Ah, but the catch is they want more money for them. $10 actually.
Which is what this book should have cost, and with the additional test questions included.
So my conclusion is this book is OK, similar to other test prep books, but not worth the price. Save your money and skip this one. You, like me, will feel ripped off when you realize how little you're getting for your money. And the offer to purchase more questions was like a slap in the face. Once bitten twice shy!

Informative! Don't have a lot of time to study for the test and this book hits all the big subjects in a quick and easy to read manner.
This book really helped, especially the practice test even though it was really easy. It still helped me get familiar with questions and wording. I passed with flying colors!
Very basic review... after graduate school I figured it would have more professional topics that would actually be worth reviewing. Lots of missing information and gaps in the very short summaries of common sense topics. Maybe you need to review the importance of building community relations and FERPA, maybe not.

This book was not helpful at all. It even referenced CSAP. After taking the test I wondered what they used to create the book. There wasn't one thing from the test in the book.
This book contains some incorrect information, such as the dates of the French Revolution (!). If you use it, check the info - I did and there are mistakes. Buyer beware. I won't be using it anymore to study.
This is a good review book that is certainly helpful for the FSOT test. However, studying this book alone will not help you pass. To pass the test, you either have a good grasp on current events/history/government, or you don't. This book will give you some good information about a wide scope of matters that appear on the test, but it cannot make an ignorant person pass the test.
My main criticism of this book is that the sample test questions are not indicative of the difficulty of the questions on the actual exam. You could get a good score on this practice exam simply by looking for the longest answer choice! Quite often, three of the four answers are 3-5 words long and one is 15-20. On the real exam, differences between answer choices are much more subtle. I found the test MUCH more difficult that the sample questions in this prep guide. The best indicator of the types of questions included on the test is the sample questions found on the PLACE website, although there are only 12 so you really can't get much practice. The most helpful information in this guide was the explanation section. By reading the rationale for the correct answers you can learn a lot about how the testers think and how to prioritize answer choices. The best advice in this whole book is when choosing the best answer, (1) consider the objective and (2) examine the identified outcome. The first 100 pages of the guide are a collection of information on the objectives included in the PLACE exam. Mometrix does not include notes in the book so you cannot even cross reference the information given. This is a huge failing in my opinion (maybe they are in the extra online resources but they ought to be in the printed book if you are quoting other authors which they are). I think there are probably better test prep books on the market for the Colorado PLACE exam and would only half-heartedly recommend this one.
