This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

FRENCH WAYS AND THEIR MEANING EDITH WHARTON Books

This book is old, but Wharton's observations on the French at the turn of the century are surprisingly accurate. I think many things we think of as traditionally "French" are slowly being lost due to waves of immigrants, a more convenience food lifestyle, etc. etc. Still, Wharton captures the French in a time many of still like to remember.

FRENCH WAYS AND THEIR MEANING EDITH WHARTON Books Reviews

Interesting historical perspective on Franco-American understanding by an important American literary figure. One hundred years and things haven’t changed much.
Mrs. Wharton's book is, in many ways, as relevant today as it was in 1914. Her observations on society and its structure is amusing and insightful. I love Edith Wharton's fiction so this essay on what makes the French tick was a surprise and a delight.
Edith Wharton makes clear what being French means without a starry eyed view of Paris nights or glorification of sensuality. Wharton is first a social scientist and second an American writer living in France. This book is a description of various parts of French culture compared to her American perspective. Her candid discussion of the differences between French and American political culture makes clear how French history has shaped the distinctive Franco political and social cultures. I found the chapter on Taste to be particularly valuable. I had read "The Gospel According to Chanel" but did not really understand the French idea of taste. Unfortunately, Wharton's ideas on women are outdated, making only certain chapters of the book valuable for social science course reading. But, presented as a contrast to de Toqueville's French view on Americans and American democracy, the two volumes would offer interesting discussions about historical social science methodology.
It's important to know that this edition (Publisher Kessinger Publishing, LLC (April 10, 2007)) is a bound photocopy. That is, it has an ordinary softcover binding, but most of the pages are blurry photocopies of the original edition. (All of this is explained in a note at the start of the book, but is not mentioned in the ordering information.)

The background of the pages is dark, dotted gray and the print is not clear. Many of the pages also have underlining and notes (that is, the original pages that were photocopied have these marks). The dark gray background affects about three fourths of the pages; perhaps half the pages are marked with underlines or comments.

Needless to say, all of this affects the book's value. Most of the book is physically hard to read because of these problems, which are not (currently) mentioned in the book's description information.

My one star is for the physical problems with this particular edition, not the contents of the book itself. (Unfortunately, doesn't have any way to differentiate between them.) The book is hard to find and people who are interested in it may well be willing to put up with the ugly physical presentation in order to get an affordable copy, but you should be informed before you buy it that for reading purposes this isn't any better than a bad fax or photocopy of a real book.
I read a couple of her books in high school and now that I'm wayyyy older, I've begun re-reading. She's a timeless author - glad my sister recommended this book. We have left the world of fiction and entered her take on France vs US vs other european countries. I didn't know she was a WWI "activist". Edith Wharton was quite incredible.

I pounced on kindle's other collections of her works. Wow is my big word for her writings. enjoy!!
This book was optically scanned and mechanically converted to pdf and was NOT proofread. All sorts of strange symbols and reading errors on almost every page. Accented letters became miscellaneous combinations of 4-6 symbols, except for the c with cedille which was always represented by a "g". NO excuse for this - a straight photocopy would have been easier to read.
AMAZON, please take note. A decent ms could easily be substituted.

EW's portrayal and explanations were excellent.
This book was printed from a scale set up for reading on a mobile device. The quality of each page is so bad I could not read it. I love this woman’s work, but seriously, see it you can get it at the library!
